Memorial University's Branch Research Data Centre (RDC)
Statistics Canada’s survey microdata is derived from master files containing a higher level of detail than what is provided in publicly available data files. For reasons of confidentiality, certain data remain restricted within the master files. However, researchers may access them via Statistics Canada’s Research Data Centres (RDCs), following a stringent application process meeting approval from Statistics Canada. Strict security and confidentiality requirements apply to the use of this data.
Memorial University houses a Branch Research Data Centre (RDC) in Room 3017C of the Queen Elizabeth II Library. The RDC is a branch of the New Brunswick Research Data Centre (NB-RDC), and provides researchers with access to socio-economic, demographic and health data in a secure setting linked to Statistics Canada’s dedicated network. The centre is staffed by a Statistical Assistant and is overseen by an Academic Director and an interdisciplinary management committee. It operates under the provisions of the Statistics Act in accordance with confidentiality rules, and is accessible only to researchers, students, faculty and government employees with approved projects who have been sworn in under the Statistics Act as 'deemed employees.'
The RDCs are part of an initiative by Statistics Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), and a consortium of universities to help strengthen Canada's social research capacity and to support the policy research community. RDCs are located in 25 universities throughout the country, so that researchers do not need to travel to Ottawa to access the microdata within Statistics Canada's master files.
