Historical Language Statement
Memorial Libraries recognize that our subject headings and catalogue contain language that is outdated and potentially harmful to some members of the public. Memorial Libraries descriptions contain controlled vocabularies, such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings, which include some headings that may be offensive and inappropriate. We are currently working towards updating these potentially harmful subject headings to better represent all peoples of this province and the general public. Our goal is to provide descriptions that are accurate, appropriate, inclusive, respectful, and no longer cause harm. We acknowledge the critical importance of community consultation in these efforts. As guests on the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Mi’kmaq, the Beothuk, the Inuit of Nunatsiavut and NunatuKavut and the Innu of Nitassinan, we commit to working collaboratively with Indigenous peoples to make these necessary changes.
