Because of the many creeks and rivers, there were no fixed ports of entry in Virginia. Instead naval officers were stationed in six districts -- Accomac, Lower James River, Upper James River, York River, Rappahannock and South Potomac. There is a complete absence of records for the period 1708 to 1725, after which largely complete returns are available until 1769.

The returns actually filmed go to 1771.

A guide to the contents is included on the first reel of the collection.
