The surviving returns for New Hampshire cover the years 1723 to 1769. They exist under three geographical names; the early returns are for Newcastle, at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. For a period in the 1720s the returns are for an area called Port New Hampshire. This term may have been used because the colony lacked a clearly-defined port, or it may have been abbreviated form of reference to Portsmouth. For the period after 1742, the returns are for Picataqua, a name applied to the whole area around the mouth of the Piscataqua River.
