After the military phase of the American Revolution began, armed vessels serving under the individual colonies started to prey on British commerce. Since the vice-admiralty courts established by the British had all but disappeared, there was no judicial system in place to deal with these actions. George Washington urged the Continental Congress to establish a proper court to decide on the legality of the seizures. Filmed from the Supreme Court records (RG 267) in the National Archives, this collection reproduces the documents on prize cases heard on appeal by a committee of the Continental Congress and later by the Court of Appeals.
A guide to the contents is included on the first reel of the collection.
