The collection consists of about 1030 letters addressed primarily to American firms. In addition to being ship brokers, the firm of Calef and Chuter acted as forwarding agents for a variety of cargoes, provided shipping intelligence, and insured ships and cargoes. The letters quote cargo rates, commodity prices, and they include comments on the effects of the seizure of ships on the American trade. The letters also contain the names of ships and masters; and in the margin of each letter is the name of the packet vessel that carried the original letter.
