William Vassall (1715-1800) was born in Jamaica, but moved to the United States with his family when he was two. Raised in Boston, he attended Harvard and in 1743, after the death of his father, he inherited the family estates in Jamaica. He lived in the US until 1775, when he moved to London. The letter books deal with sugar plantations, the export of rum and sugar to England and the provision of goods for his Jamaican estates. Among his London correspondents was Beeston Long, deputy Governor of the Royal Exchange Assurance company and chair of the society of West India Merchants.
