The letter-book is the last of a series of correspondence kept by the Liverpool trading firm of Sparling and Bolden. Originally formed in Virginia, the firm's major activity was to export British goods to Virginia in return for bills of exchange, or specie, or occasional shipments of Virginia produce, such as turpentine or tar. The correspondence includes information on commodity prices, notices and bills for services rendered.
