The four rolls in this collection include letters that were received by the Superintendent of the US Naval Academy from 1845 to 1869. (There are a few documents dated as early as 1843). He had the authority to appoint or remove all individuals employed at the school. He was also responsible for the buildings, grounds and vessels belonging to the school. The letters reproduced in this collection relate to the various administrative responsibilities carried out by the Superintendent. They were received from the Navy Department and its bureaus; other Government officials, including members of Congress; naval officers, civilian personnel and students at the Academy; and private individuals and organizations.
