The two rolls in this collection include letters sent by the Superintendent of the US Naval Academy from 1845 to 1863. He had the authority to appoint or remove all individuals employed at the school. He was also responsible for the buildings, grounds and vessels belonging to the school. The letters in this collection relate to the various administrative responsibilities carried out by the Superintendent. Many of the letters were sent to the Secretary of the Navy and the Navy Department bureaus. Others were addressed to midshipmen, professors and other civilian and naval personnel attached to the Academy; applicants for admission to the Academy; various public and private individuals; and businesses.
