An act of 1819 ordered that captains of vessels arriving at an American port from a foreign country submit a list of the passengers to the collector of customs in the district in which the vessel arrived. Reproduced from the Rewards of the Bureau of Customs (RG 36), these lists normally included information about each passenger -- name, age, sex, occupation, country of origin and country of destination. Information about the vessel included the name, name of the master, date of entry, tonnage, and previous port.

A guide to the contents is included on the first reel of the collection.
