This collection consists chiefly of the papers of Henry Lee (1782-1867) a prosperous India merchant and free trade economist. (His mother was Elizabeth Cabot, a member of another prosperous Boston family). After having lived in India for several years, Lee returned to Boston, where he established a company trading to the East and West Indies, Europe and South America. The collation includes account books, cash books, letter books and ledgers of various family business firms. Their contents provide considerable information on mercantile business practices during the period 1760-1860.
