This collection of account books, letter books and travel diaries provides insight into the two Boston families that were the most powerful China merchants: Samuel Cabot Jr. and his father-in-law, Thomas Handasyd Perkins. Much of the correspondence concerns the China trade and, in particular, the opium trade in which the Cabot and Perkins firms were heavily involved. The collection also includes business and family correspondence relating the mercantile trade in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
