William Blathwayt was a key official during the creation of England's overseas empire at the end of the seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth centuries, serving both as the Secretary of the Lords of Trade and Plantation and, after 1696, as a Commissioner of the Board of Trade. This collection filmed from the manuscripts at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Library, pertains to American colonial affairs and the British West Indies, with more than half the material relating to the letter. It includes letters to Blathwayt by colonial governors and other officials, as well as drafts of letters by Blathwayt and numerous accounts, receipts and requests. Among the topics are illegal colonial trade; attempts to enforce the Acts of Trade and Navigation; trade and fishing in Newfoundland; piracy in the Caribbean; and the tobacco trade in Virginia.
