Written in 1827 during a visit to the United States and Canada, these letters, published the next year, include a description of the voyage from Liverpool to Long Island, as well as a recounting of visits to the eastern seaboard cities of New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Beaufoy also visited cities along the Hudson River and around the Great Lakes, eventually reaching Montreal. Shipbuilding, steamboat and riverboat travel, living conditions, labour, migration and slavery are among the topics discussed.
