The diaries reproduced are those kept by the three children of William Russell (1740-1817), a Birmingham iron founder and manufacturer, who migrated with his family to America in 1794. In 1799, Martha, a daughter, returned to England and in 1801 Russell and his other children also left America. The diaries cover the period 1794 to 1801 and include descriptions of their travels in America, as well as their journeys across the Atlantic.
