Reproduced from the original volumes in the National Maritime Museum, the registers consist of information provided by the Registrar at each port concerning loss of vessels, the criteria for inclusion being registry at a British port rather than the place of casualty. They were collected as a result of the Merchant Shipping Act of 1854 and terminated after the Merchant Shipping Act of 1894.
