Isaac Hobhouse & Co., founded by Isaac Hobhouse (1685-1763), was one of the leading Bristol merchant houses, engaged primarily in the trade between England, West Africa and either the Caribbean or the southern plantation colonies, Virginia and South Carolina. This collection represents all that survives of the papers of the firm. Included are about 140 letters to the firm from other merchants in the Caribbean or mainland colonies. Other business documents provide details about the commodities carried, methods of payment and other problems related to the eighteenth century trade. (One document gives power of attorney to Captain John Davis to act on behalf of Isaac Hobhouse in Newfoundland).
