Census material is a vital source for the study of the demographic and occupational profiles of port cities. Used in conjunction with the census material for Southampton, it provides contrasting information by virtue of their orientation to the coal trade and passenger liner trade respectively. The census also complements the information found in the collection of crew agreements owned by the Maritime History Archive. They can be used to link seamen to their origins on shore; family life; and their later careers once they had retired from the sea.
