This collection includes a private log book kept by Captain James Brown when he commanded the Liverpool trading ship "Gossypium" on a total of eleven voyages between Liverpool and New Orleans during these years 1844-1846, a letter book containing letters written by Brown from 1843 until 1851, the year of his death, as well as papers and accounts connected with the "Gossypium", "Alexander Grant" and "Ellen", three ships in which he had a financial interest.
