Because of infringements of previous acts, the navigation act of 1696 limited trade with the colonies not only to English-owned but English-built shipping. (Exceptions were made for captured prizes and recovered shipwrecks). In order to enforce the regulation those who intended to use their vessels in trade with the colonies were required to register their vessels. Very few of these registers have survived, the most complete being those compiled by the Custom House in Liverpool. The registers include the following information: date registered, name of the ship, owner's name, home port, master's name, year built, place built and tonnage.
A guide to the contents is included on the first reel of the collection.
