By the late eighteenth century Liverpool was experiencing significant growth, and the sense of civic pride engendered was reflected in the growing interest in the history of the city. Two men actively involved in collecting both printed and manuscript material devoted to Liverpool were John Holt (1743-1801) and Matthew Gregson (1749-1824). Their collection focuses on the life of this important port city since the middle ages, but with emphasis on the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

The American material in the collection falls into four broad categories: 1) material related to the slave trade, 2) material related to British trade with the Americas, especially the United States, 3) material related to privateering during the American Revolution, and 4) statistics and accounts of America in the late eighteenth century.

A guide to the contents is included at the beginning of the reel.
