This collection includes those parts of the Charles Townsend (1725-1767) papers that relate to the British colonies from Canada to Jamaica. Most of the papers filmed were generated during the years 1766-1767, when Townshend was Chancellor of the Exchequer. The topics include the Newfoundland fishery, a description of Lord Cathcart's expedition to the Caribbean in 1740 and trade, including proposals to open a number of free ports.

An annotated guide to the contents of the papers is included on the first reel of the collection.
