Women in Medicine - March 2020

International Women’s Day is March 8, 2020.  This display highlights various women in medicine past and present at Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University and across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Dr. Margaret Steele is the first female Dean of the MUN medical school.

This display is located in the 2nd floor lobby of the Medical Education Centre.  The display was prepared and installed by Melissa Hefford, Archival Assistant with the Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive, Health Sciences Library.

 

Convocation – May 2019

This display highlights photos and achievements from the Faculty of Medicine classes of 2017 and 2018.  Photos are also included from Shingles Night 2018.  Convocation is a time to celebrate the monumental achievements and successes in the Faculty of Medicine.

The display was created and installed by Melissa Hefford, Archival Assistant, Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive, Health Sciences Library.

 

History of Medical Technology – March – April 2019

This display highlights the history of medical technology throughout the years at the MUN Medical School and at the Health Sciences Centre.  It features photos of older medical technology such as telemedicine transmitters, blood dialysis unit and the old research laboratory.  It also showcases photos of newer medical technology such as a new mobile ultrasound machine, high fidelity mannequins, Hemo Techt and cancer care technologies. 

The display features two original oxygen gas tanks accompanied by the original oxygen respirator mask.  A copy of MUNMED and excerpt pages concerning advancements and new discoveries in medical technology is also included.

2018

Women in Medicine - March & April 2018

This display was created to coincide with International Women’s Day 2018 which took place on March 8, 2018. This display highlights the numerous achievements, successes and discoveries of various women in medicine. The Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University received its first female Dean of Medicine in 2016 with the arrival of Dr. Margaret Steele. Included in the display are photos of early faculty at the medical school, Nurse Janet Story, former Artist in Residence at the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Pam Hall, Dr. Jane Green, Dr. Penny Allderdice, Dr. Shakti Chandra and others. Women have played a vital role in their significant contributions to the medical field.

Convocation: Student and Alumni Success - May 2018

May month is synonymous with Convocation at Memorial University. This display focuses on the many key achievements, successes and honors of past graduates of the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University. The display highlights Convocation 2017 with photos and the official convocation booklet. Also featured in this display is the very first graduating class from 1973 along with a photo of the very first graduate to receive doctor of medicine in Newfoundland and Labrador. Convocation is a time to reflect on ones successes and plan career goals for the future.

Aboriginal & Indigenous Health - June & July 2018

This display was created to coincide with the 2nd annual Aboriginal Health Symposium, June 6, 2018. June 21, 2018 is also National Indigenous Peoples Day. This display highlights the Aboriginal Health Initiative at the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University along with the program coordinator, Dr. Carolyn Sturge-Sparkes. The Faculty of Medicine has made substantial contributions and measures to make Memorial University a better place for Aboriginal students. The display also features excerpts from MUNMed on Aboriginal health research and a booklet and photographs from the 2017 inaugural Aboriginal Health Symposium.

40th anniversary of the Health Sciences Centre - August & September 2018

This display was created to recognize the 40th anniversary of the Health Sciences Centre.  The hospital officially opened on October 26, 1978.  There was a need for a new teaching hospital once the Memorial University medical school opened in 1967.  The Health Sciences Centre became the new general hospital with the previous general hospital being renamed the Dr. L. A. Miller Centre.  This display features photos from both the construction and opening of the hospital, newspaper excerpt, and official opening reception invitation card.

MUN Medicine MD reunion – October-November, 2018

Reunion 2018: October 11-15

This display highlights and celebrates the MUN medicine classes of 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008.  The display features class photos, candid photos and photos of the class’ ceiling tiles.  Reunion is a time to come together to reflect, reminisce and celebrate the great achievements and successes of each graduating class.
