Accessing Material

Material within the Faculty of Medicine Founders' Archive is available for research to staff, faculty, students and the general public, unless otherwise restricted by legal requirements or written agreements with the donor(s).

Policy

The Faculty of Medicine Founders' Archive's policy on access and use is intended to foster open intellectual inquiry within the context of the law, government regulation, institutional policy, and the ethics of the health and archival professions. The Archive observes several guiding principles:

  • Respect for open intellectual inquiry
  • Protection of rights to privacy, proprietary information, donor agreements, etc.
  • Adherence to pertinent regulatory and legal codes
  • Preservation and maintenance of archival materials

A major segment of the holdings is available for research. However, certain categories of documentation carry restrictions on access. These categories include, but are not limited to, the following types of documentation:

  • Patient records
  • Personnel and student records
  • Records of research subjects
  • Confidential committee records

Procedures

Records in restricted categories may be made accessible for research when legal, regulatory and ethical conditions permit. Users wishing to apply for access to restricted records must submit a formal request to the Archive Advisory Committee.
