Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

(posted March 19, 2018)

You can improve the coverage of gender, feminism, and the arts on Wikipedia at Newfoundland and Labrador’s first ever Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon!

Wikipedia is one of the world’s most popular free online research tools - but did you know that a Wikimedia poll in 2011 found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female? That gender imbalance is reflected in the site’s content. A global project, Art+Feminism, is addressing that issue by holding Edit-A-Thons around the world during the month of March, with more than 11,000 articles improved so far. Art+Feminism is about making Wikipedia a more complete, accurate and representative source of information that acknowledges the important contribution of women, through the arts.

Coinciding with its 5th anniversary, the movement has now reached Newfoundland and Labrador. Art+Feminism Grenfell is inviting the Grenfell Campus community and the public – no matter your gender - to its first ever Feminist Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon on Friday, March 23, at the Ferriss Hodgett  Library on Grenfell Campus, Corner Brook. From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., organizers, Librarians and volunteers will be on hand to support people in all things Wikipedia, from creating content to updating and editing current pages. No experience necessary. The event will provide reference materials, computers, refreshments and childcare (by request).

Hoping to make this an annual event, this year’s inaugural Edit-A-Thon will be focused on improving and creating Wikipedia pages related to female artists from, or with a connection to, Newfoundland and Labrador. From Mary Pratt to Lisa Moore and beyond, our province has a rich female artistic history that deserves to be properly documented on the internet’s largest information resource.

If you can't make it in person, you can still create a free and instant Wikipedia account and join our event online: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Grenfell_Campus_-_Memorial_University/A_and_F_Grenfell_Corner_Brook
